MCC Mallorca Trip 2016
Thirty cyclists mainly from Marble City and Kells Angels Cycling Clubs headed off to Mallorca on the 27th April 2016 for five days cycling including the Mallorca 312 Cycling Sportive.
Day 1 Thursday 28th April
Hired bikes arrive as planned and we are good to go, apart from Fenton in his flip flops!
Weather a bit damp so the annual pilgrimage to Sa Calabra was deferred and the group headed down to the Monastery instead.
Legs were loosened up on the climb up to the Monastery.
Spin of approx. 110km, 500mtrs
Day 2 Friday 29th April
Day before the Sportive! A handy day for some.
Weather much better although hard to escape the wind. Some brave souls headed for Sa Calabra (spin of 120km and 2,000 mtrs), others took a spin to Pollenca and another group went looking for Josh’s sun glasses that were left on the side of the road the previous day and we got them. Honest people in Mallorca. Spins of 60/70km
Cycling legends at the Lighthouse.
Day 3- Saturday 30th April – Sportive Day!!
Early start, breakfast at 6am and on the starting line at 6.30am ready for the off at 7.
Not a great start to the day light rain just as we headed off. Great to be part of the 4,600 cyclists starting the event.
Three distances on closed roads:
167km & 2,500 mtrs climbing,
232km & 3,800 mtrs climbing
312km & 4,500 mtrs climbing
Roads were damp so the decents were tricky but thankfully everyone got around in one piece.
Well done to all for completing the Sportive and mention to the two lads that completed the 232km and to five of the lads that completed the 312km. Twelve hours and seven minutes in the saddle for the 312, a long day!
Non alcoholic beer & pasta after Sportive!
Happy after the 312!
Day 4- Sunday 1st May
Bus to the far corner of the Island, Andratx and cycle back to Alcudia (what else would you be doing the day after a Sportive!). Wet start to the day all very wet at the first coffee stop. Brightened up after that and a more pleasant spin back.
Spin of 110km and 1,000mtrs.
Tired souls on Sunday night.
Lads that completed the long one the previous day did well to get up on the bikes!
Gerry fits well in the “small” jersey!
Day 5- Monday 2nd May
Supposed to be a quiet day! A lovely sunny day.
The main group headed for a spin up to the lighthouse, Cap Formentor, 70km approx. 800mtrs., but with some very nice climbing. Great views on the way.
Another group headed to Sa Calabra, has to be done!
Bikes handed over, check out of hotel and off to Palma Airport for the late flight home.
Tired bodies after five great days of cycling but delighted to be home safe and sound.
Roll on Mallorca 2017!
Spin to Sa Calabra on Monday.
